Mucoid
otitis media is characterized by a thick tenacious effusion that
contains fibrous strands (Figure 1). Inflammatory
cells may or may not be present in the effusion.
The epithelium is hyperplastic with proliferation of ciliated and
goblet cells. The
subepithelial layer is infiltrated with inflammatory cells, most
commonly mononuclear cells. There is neovascularization and submucosal gland formation,
and granulation tissue is a common finding.
